THE IDEA CREATE HOW IT WORKS TIMELINE JUDGING JAPAN FAQ PARTNERS APPLY

The most interesting flavours often emerge between cultures.

What happens when Japanese craft meets Indian creativity?

Japanese wooden-barrel-aged shoyu is the starting point; not the destination.

The craft remains rooted.
The possibilities move forward.

Spice The Lore invites creators to take an ingredient shaped by time and reinterpret it through their own flavours, techniques, experiences and cultural references.

Innovation begins when familiar ingredients meet unfamiliar questions.

The next product often begins with a different question.

Japanese wooden-barrel-aged shoyu can be the starting point for entirely new ideas, formats and products.

The strongest products balance imagination with intention.

What makes an idea worth developing?

A strong entry is more than an interesting flavour combination. It begins with a clear idea, gives Japanese wooden-barrel-aged shoyu a meaningful role, and develops that idea into something people can understand, use and imagine in the real world.

THE STRONG ENTRY

An idea becomes interesting when it has a reason to exist. It becomes powerful when that reason survives development.

01

START WITH A POINT OF VIEW

What are you trying to create that does not already exist?

02

MAKE THE SHOYU MATTER

Why does this product need Japanese wooden-barrel-aged shoyu?

03

BUILD FOR THE REAL WORLD

What happens when the idea leaves the kitchen?

04

DESIGN FOR CONSISTENCY

Can the idea become a repeatable product?

05

KNOW WHO IT IS FOR

Who would understand the value of this product?

06

GIVE IT A STORY

What makes someone remember it?

Before you submit

THE CREATOR’S TEST

Before you submit, step away from the recipe.

  1. PURPOSE Can I explain in one sentence what this product is and why it should exist?
  2. ROLE Can I clearly explain what the wooden-barrel-aged shoyu contributes?
  3. EXPERIENCE Is there a distinctive flavour, texture, aroma, ritual or use experience?
  4. REPEATABILITY Have I developed the process enough to make it consistently?
  5. REAL-WORLD FIT Can I see it functioning in a real culinary, hospitality or retail context?
  6. POTENTIAL Could this become more than a one-off creation?

If you can answer these questions with clarity, you are no longer just presenting a recipe. You are presenting a product idea.

A strong entry doesn’t just answer the brief. It gives us a reason to remember the idea.

Creative freedom works best within clear boundaries.

The non-negotiable brief.

Before you create, make sure your idea meets every one of these conditions.

The brief

Create an original, shelf-stable product for India in which Japanese wooden-barrel-aged shoyu plays a meaningful role.

01

ORIGINAL

The product must be your own considered idea, not a copy of an existing product.

02

SHELF-STABLE

It must be designed to remain stable at ambient temperature.

03

NO ADDED PRESERVATIVES

The formulation must contain no added chemical preservatives.

04

NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS

Colour must come from the ingredients or the natural character of the product.

05

NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS

The flavour profile must be built from real ingredients and thoughtful process.

06

SHOYU MUST MATTER

Japanese wooden-barrel-aged shoyu must have a meaningful sensory or functional role.
